Winter gives us many gifts...coats, gloves, glam layers, cute hats and an excuse to huddle inside. We can also use Winter to our beauty advantage too, using richer, deeper colors and treating our skin to nourishing products and treatments. But today, let’s talk about lips. Winter is the perfect time for bold, opaque, unapologetic lips, and matte lipsticks are the ideal tool.
We’ve chosen a selection of the best matte lipsticks to treat yourself with this Winter!
Why choose a matte lipstick?
Matte lipsticks are long-wearing and last for hours if they’re applied smartly. If your idea of a matte lipstick is a drying, uncomfortable, “plaster-feeling” mess, don’t worry. So many brands have started to make their matte lipsticks with amazing new formulas to keep the lips matte and hydrated. Matte lipsticks provide full, opaque, pigmented color to create a statement look. You can always layer them with gloss to change up the texture throughout the day and into the night.
How to prepare lips for a matte lipstick?
Matte lipsticks are generally rather unforgiving of dry, flaky lips. Take a flannel or face cloth, wet it, and gently scrub the lips with little circular movements. You can add a little bit of oil or lotion to make the process a little easier if you wish.
As an alternative to the good old face cloth, you can make a lip scrub by mixing together sugar and olive oil. Stand with your face well over the sink to avoid dropping crunchy sugar and oily mess all over the bathroom floor (and your clothes). Rub the mixture into your lips and wipe the excess away. You’ll be left with fresh, tingly, full and moisturized lips without a trace of dry skin.
When moisturizing your face with your usual cream or lotion, don’t neglect the lips. Rub what’s ever left on your hands over your freshly-exfoliated lips. This is a good rule of thumb to remember for everyday beauty, matte lips or not.
Next, add a rich lip balm to soak into the lips as you do the rest of your makeup or get dressed before adding the final lippie touch.
Give your balmy lips a decent blot with a tissue to remove any excess balm which may interfere with the texture of the lipstick.
Apply your lippie, either straight from the bullet or with a brush…(btw, I’m a total “from-the-bullet” girl due to being lazy).
Now, blot the lips with a tissue again. This will take the top layer of the lipstick off and leave a stain, almost like a primer layer.
Apply another coat of lipstick over your initial layer, this will intensify the color and lengthen the lifespan of the lipstick between applications.
