If you’re thinking of dyeing your hair, why not think outside the box and go for a pastel shade? If there’s a time to do it, it’s certainly now. Keep reading for some pastel hair inspiration, color suggestions, celebrity examples and a few tips for styling pastel hair...

Why are pastels so in right now?
You could make the claim that pastel hair is in right now because of a few select celebrities with major followings (i.e. Kylie Jenner!). But I think that it’s because we are in a time of beauty when anything goes. We are in a time when color is embraced and beauty doesn’t just mean long blonde locks or a glossy black mane. It can mean short, choppy hair in pale lilac or long tendrils of pastel pink, or curly lengths of green and turquoise ombre...what a time to be alive.

The best pastel colors
Pink - SO incredibly feminine, pastel pink hair brings a soft innocence to the wearer, at the same time as making a punch. Whether you’ve got light or dark roots peeping through, pink hair suits almost all skin tones and looks incredible with soft, dewy, pillowy makeup.
Lilac - there’s something kind of old-school glam about lilac hair and I can’t put my finger on it. Perhaps it’s because lilac has a shot of silvery grey which makes it seem icy and cool, like an old Hollywood starlet with an attitude. Lilac hair looks incredible on warm skin tones.
Green and turquoise - green-toned hair makes a statement, you can’t get around that. It’s contemporary, brave, and definitely mermaid-inspired no matter which way you swing it. Green and turquoise looks divine when created with an ombre effect from mid-length downward. That’s not to say that full on opaque green isn’t a complete stand-out, but it does take more commitment.
Blue - pastel blue hair has a certain ice-queen, snow princess vibe to it, especially when the tone leans toward grey than purple. You can go deeper toward navy, or keep it pale, pastel and sky-like with lighter hints of silver. Blue hair looks amazing on all skin tones but it’s a great shade for pale gals.

Peach - pastel peach hair has got to be one of the sweetest looks you can create. Not to suggest it’s not incredibly cool, which it is...but it’s just so creamy and warm. Tanned goddesses look amazing with peachy locks, especially when it’s cropped to show the shoulders.

Celebrity pastel style inspiration
Kylie Jenner - the queen of green, pink, yellow, blue and peach pastel hues. She’s basically a one-stop inspiration shop for pastel dye creations.

Emily Ratajkowski - Em rocked the most beautiful pink, shoulder-length hair with wavy fringe. Definitely look her up for warm-toned, femme hair motivation.
Zayn Malik - Zayn showed us how the guys should do pastels with his pink, spiky tips. He went bright and he went pale...both amazing.
Rita Ora - Rita rivals Kylie in the pastel hair champs. She’s done pink, blue, peachy, and even an incredible pink-fading-to-purple, poker-straight look.

Nicole Richie - Nic is the perfect ambassador for the shoulder-length, wavy hair in a rich tone of pastel purple. She’s worn a few different color variations so check her out if you’re thinking along the purple/lilac wavelength.

Kelly Osbourne - how could we leave Kelly off the list? She championed short, ice-purple hair for so long it was her signature feature. She’s a great person to look to if you want a super short cut to go along with your lilac dye.

The best styles to pair with your pastels
Bobbed - to the ears or just below, curly or straight, but should always be shiny and sleek. Great with all colors but especially pinks and purples.
Long and wavy - total mermaid hair, amazing with a center part and an ombre effect with turquoise or green tones.
Straight and sharp - poker straight, super-shiny and dyed with a mix of contrasting blues and purples...if you’re brave, which you should be!
Roughly braided and tied - this is a great look for pastel hair with visible original roots. Tie in some rough braids and toss the whole lot up into a messy bun. Carefree and always cool.

We only live once, so why not have a pastel hair phase to brighten up our lives?
