Luxury-caped, rap-spitting royalty A$AP ROCKY knew all about fine clothes even before when he released Fashion Killa, dropping signature names from Prada and Escada to Dolce and Gabbanna. Since his solo debut in 2013, he has been transforming himself from a hip-hop group member to an artist of his own making – less clad in monochrome sweats, more of a style rebel that broke through the ceiling with a punch. There's a reason why designers loved collaborating with him; from his grim black leathers to his colourful streetwear ensembles, A$AP ROCKY can sell it, pushing the boundaries for the male confidence.
A$AP ROCKY's sartorial wit wasn't always right in the media's face. In his starting days, his style was subtle, sticking to blacks, perhaps harmonizing with that Harlem spirit with slouchy streetwear and droopy trousers. Maybe it was his music, and his exposure to brands who wooed him for collaboration, that made him turn his fashion up a notch. One could not forget the collection of tracksuits and teddy-bear coats he released with JW Anderson on 2016. Soon enough, his fashion week ensembles follow through the colours. On 2017, he was seen stepping out with a red down jacket and a matching Balenciaga bag. Hues turn royal in Milan Fashion week, where he was spotted wearing a caramel Gucci velvet coat, slinky red jacket and patterned red-and-blue trousers.
This 2018, A$AP ROCKY switched up the volume louder, marrying hip-hop culture with luxury fashion houses, cementing his status as a true style icon. His best looks, of course, include some of the names he mentioned in his rap song, not surprisingly.
His top-to-toe Calvin Klein ensemble at NYFW was a head turner: orange-and-yellow splashed navy fur coat atop a striped oversized knit shows a feeling of ease as well as the warmth of winter ebbing away. The brightly-coloured look is finished off with dark red trousers and white boots.
Pinning for some paisley? A$AP ROCKY slipped into a patchwork-like coordinates that reflected the easy-going spirit of Dries Van Noten at Paris Fashion Week. This, he capped off with Vans sneakers. What a rebel.
Before that, he donned a handsome monogrammed double-breasted suit from Louis Vuitton, in his favourite black colour, contrasting with the pair of pearl necklaces he wore. To break the formality, he finished this look with a black Vlone x Nike Air Force 1 sneakers.
Gotcha, Gucci. A$AP ROCKY celebrated Gucci's NY store opening with a rather preppy ensemble: navy blue jumper, a thick wad of pearls as necklace, and Gucci's monogrammed tote with an orange R shining right through it.
A$AP ROCKY proved that he doesn't just do black with a summery Dior suit in grey. The hip-hop sensation matched this blazer with a mesh shirt, then capped off the look with a pair of, what else? Dior sneakers.
Nobody wears jumpsuits better than A$AP. While promoting Testing, he wore his custom Himumimdead jumpsuit and Prada Cloudburst sneakers.
Perhaps that inflatable vest from Balenciaga is tucked somewhere in his attic, but 2018's A$AP ROCKY is more willing to experiment in the vibrancy of colours, and the uniqueness of shapes. Can’t wait to see him experiment on new looks this coming year, and we know it’s going to be fire.
