Few people in the world are as lucky as Denis Čebulec. He does work both in front and behind the camera, as a model and a photographer. As a photographer, he has a lot of experience working for well-known brands such as Polo Ralph Lauren, MVMT, Parkland MFG, GoPatch, and Kingsbox, among others. As a model, he has modeled for independent photographers as well as various agencies.
Denis Čebulec was born and raised in Slovenia and has a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from the Sports University in Ljubljana. As part of the Kult Models agency, the six-feet-tall model and photographer is now based in Salzburg, Germany (but not for long).
Denis actually never saw himself delving into modeling or photography. His only exposure to the industry was his then-girlfriend who was earning extra money as a sport model. “She earned the same amount of money per day as I earn in a month”, Cebulec says.
At the time, he was a working student who held a job as a barista during his off-hours from school. And when she tried to convince him to attend a casting call for a sport shooting, he was hesitant at first. “Back then, I had no portfolio shots or anything like that. Just a few basic portraits of me.”
Still, he decided to take the risk. His then-girlfriend encouraged him by saying that sport modelling is unlike most kinds of modeling, such as fashion modeling. While fashion models need to be able to pose and angle themselves well in front of the camera, sport models only need to know the sports that they’re modeling for.
In Čebulec’s case, he was already a lover of sports (since he was a kid) and enjoyed running, biking, playing tennis and basketball, and even skateboarding and snowboarding. “I said to myself, okay, let's have a day-trip to Munich and go to the casting. [In the] worst case scenario, I will have a sightseeing of Munich,” he recounts.
Čebulec’s pessimistic forecast of the future never came true, however. “Next thing I know, 3 days later I am flying to Martinique, Caribbean for nearly 2 weeks for a photo production of the sports catalogue.” And the rest, as they say, is history.
Right now, Čebulec is enjoying his time as both a model and a photographer. However, when asked which one he liked better, he admits that it does depend a lot on the kind of work that needs to be done. “Let's say it like this, if it would be a really cool shooting, I would prefer to be a photographer. [Modelling] is a bit easier though, because after the job, you don't have to do anything more. Just pack your stuff and go home.”
Aside from photography and modeling, Čebulec also does a lot of traveling, both in his free time and for work. He considers himself lucky for the opportunity. “[If I could rate my luck] from 1 to 10, I would say 8 because right now I am in Moscow, Russia. And I would rather be somewhere else warm,” he laughs. “So 9 will be next week when I am flying to Zimbabwe.
And 10 is not reachable yet for me. Yet.”
The model and photographer shares that Greenland is on top of his wish list when it comes to must-see destinations, while Cambodia was a mixed bag of experiences. “Don't get me wrong!” Čebulec says. “[Cambodia] is still, a very, very beautiful country, but [its poverty and horrible history] made me feel very sad and somehow guilty.” Nevertheless, he wishes to return in a few years to visit the Cambodian jungle.
Currently, Čebulec says that his life priority is to travel and create content, as well as to work, perhaps more, in front of the camera. “I’m starting to discover my true self. I think that self-love is a key for a peaceful mind”. And while he enjoys spending time and traveling all by himself, he also enjoys having good people around him.
Few people may be as lucky as Denis Cebulec, but his luck was born from persistence, discipline, and a mountain of hard work. In his own words, “Luck doesn’t come just like that. You have to fight for it, and sometimes grow some balls.”
